How to enable Windows firewall in Windows 10

  • If you use Windows, Windows Defender Firewall should be enabled by default.
    • Go to Control PanelSystem and SecurityWindows Defender FirewallTurn Window Firewall on or off to turn on the Windows Defender firewall in both private and public networks. 

If your firewall is enabled, you should not be able to ping your Windows machine from another machine.


How to make sure Windows Defender is enabled

For Windows Operating System, Windows Defender is sufficient to protect your devices and data from malware.

  • Update your Windows Defender regularly.
    • Go to SettingsUpdate and SecurityWindows UpdatesCheck for updates

  • Set Laptop to perform continuous and/or scheduled full system scanning. 
    • Go to SettingsUpdate and SecurityWindows SecurityVirus & Threat ProtectionScan OptionsFull ScanScan

  • Ensure that the Anti-Virus software is operating at all times in real-time scan mode.

    • Go to the system tray icons and clicking the up arrow, if it is running all time you should see this icon.
  • Ensure to enable real-time protection

    • Go to SettingsUpdate and SecurityWindows SecurityVirus & Threat Protection SettingsManage SettingsReal Time Protection
